Voices Visible Writing Contest
For interested students:
The Provincial Specialist Association of BC Teachers of English Language Arts (BCTELA) puts out a publication of student writing. The contest is free, and the deadline for submissions is April 30, 2013.

CITY OF EMBER
FINAL ACTIVITY: Choose one of the following as a close activity for the novel (you may work in partners for activity #3-5)
DUE: Thursday, March 14th
1. Theme is a central idea or message that is carried throughout a book. What are some of the important themes in the novel? How these themes relate to the following topics:
personal strength and courage
friendship
responsibility
the search for truth
2. Activity: "A conversation between..." Write a dialogue between 2 characters about a specific event in from these chapters. For example, When Lina and Doon leave they have no idea what is happening back in the city of Ember. Imagine that Mrs. Murdo is concerned about Lina and Poppy, talks to Mr. Harrow. Write a dialogue between Mrs. Murdo and Mrs. Harrow in which they discuss the missing children.
3. The novel, City of Ember, has been made into a graphic novel. Design the book jacket for this graphic novel version. Include title and author on cover and a summary of the story in your own words on the back.
4. Create a letter that has whole words and parts of words missing. The letter should contain an important message or lead to a "treasure". Distribute copies of this letter to your classmates so that they can solve the mystery.
5. Imagine you are a reporter for a magazine and are given the chance to interview the author Jeanne Duprau. Write a transcript of this discussion. (Questions and Answers).
