GR. 6/7 IDENTITY INQUIRY: WHAT IS MY STORY?
What is Inquiry-Based Learning?
Each week we will explore and brainstorm together ideas for possible sub questions for each "big/focus" question. You will be required to come up with 3 sub questions for each topic every week and take notes for each of your answers to these subquestions. You also need to choose an "artifact" that is a visual/symbol to help support your question each week. An artifact can be a photo or image, an object, a drawing, something that you've created, etc...
How do I research?
The subquestions that you develop and use are the foundation of your research and the notes that you take each week is your "data collection". Research can be looking for information in books or on the internet, however since YOU are the main focus of this inquiry much of your research will be personal reflection, however another valuable form of research can is interviews with "experts". An expert is someone that knows a lot about the topic you are researching. For your Inquiry you are required to conduct an interview with someone either by communicating orally or written with someone who can help you answer some of the questions you are asking.
For example:
How do I share?
At the end of the 5 week inquiry you will finalizing putting your project together by deciding how you will share your findings and tell us about your story using each week's questions as your guide. You are required to prepare an oral presentation but you can choose what this looks like. There are some suggestions for this in the Inquiry Handout (planning package) that you received.

Week 1 - What is my culture?
Here is a video to help you think about what culture is: Culture defined
There is also a book that I assigned on EPIC "I can write about my culture" that you can read to help you decide on your 3 sub questions that you will research and answer this week.
After you have an understanding about what culture is, you can start thinking about "what is MY culture?" Here are some possible sub questions for this week that might help you further answer this big question. Remember that you need to have 3:
Do I have any family traditions? For example food/dishes that we prepare and eat, activities we do, games we play, etc.
What holiday(s) do I celebrate that is important to my family and our traditions?
What is my heritage? Where were my parents born? Where were my grandparents born? What is my family tree?
What languages are spoken in my family?
What symbols represent my culture?
What does is mean to be Canadian?
What myths/legends are important to my culture?
How does my family's heritage influence me today? What customs/traditions does my family have that are influenced from our heritage?
