Dictée: Les sports

Les enfants peuvent pratiquer plusieurs sports. Certains raffolent du soccer ou du hockey. D'autres préfèrent ski, le tennis ou la natation. Toi, quel sport devrais-tu choisir? Prends celui
qui te plait et pratique-le avec entrain. Quelle joie, quel plaisir il t'apportera!

Le singe et le serpent

Il était une fois un singe un peu gourmand. Il s`appelait Jokolime et avait neuf ans. Jokolime adorait manger des feuilles d`oranger. Un jour, un serpent menacant s`approche de lui. Il va le mordre quand Jokolime le voit. Le singe l`entoure de feuilles d`oranger et réussit à s`enfuir.

2. A symbol in literature is a person, object or event that represents an idea. What might the growing bean seed in Lina's room symbolize and explain why this is important for the people of Ember?

3. What does Clary mean when she tells Lina, "Everyone has some darkness inside"? What "darkness", if any, have you detected in Lina and Doon?

Ch. 9-11: Spelling and Response Questions

Activity: Diary Entry
Imagine you are one of the characters from the novel (Lina, Doon, Clary, Mrs. Murdo, etc.). You have saved some paper for a diary. In a diary entry from the point of view of your character write about your feelings and thoughts. Try to be as descriptive as possible and to use specific details to support your ideas.

1. In what ways does Mrs. Murdo show she is "somewhere between a friend and a relative" to Lina?
2. How has life changed in Ember since the seven-minute power outage? What is the mood of the city?

A simile is a comparison using like or as. What is being compared in the following similes?

Write and illustrate your own simile to compare an element of the setting or a character form the novel.
